Notes for MARTHA J. WEAVER:

Middle Ga. Argus – Week of August 10, 1893

On Saturday, the family of Mrs. G. C. Thaxton, held a reunion at the old

homestead near Elgin. The family was a somewhat remarkable one, there being

twelve children, six boys and six girls. The oldest was a boy and the next a

girl, and alternating all the way through. The ninth was still born and the

father and oldest boy died in 1885. These living children with their wives,

husbands, children and grandchildren, numbering 36 grandchildren, eight great-

grandchildren an a few other near relatives cast themselves together in and

around the old house in which they were reared and spent the day as one great

family. When the sun reached the meridian a long table was spread under the

broad beautiful oaks near

The old oaken bucket,

The iron bound bucket,

The moss covered bucket,

That hangs on the well.

From which a feast indeed was partaken, eighty two persons being the whole

number who partook of the tempting meal.

It was a day of pleasure, but as vacant chairs were seen and thoughts of those

gone before would arise sadness would fill our hearts and sometimes the willing

tears would freely flow. There were absent 14 grand children, 8 great

grandchildren and 25 dead, making the whole number emanating from the mother,

still living, 84 souls.

1 April 1884- Middle Georgia Argus - Mr. W. R. Weaver, one of the most successful farmers in the county gave us a pleasant call one day last week. Mr. Weaver is one of the few farmers who has made a fortune by growing cotton, but while he has been ______farmer he has alway made ______and homony at home.

5 April 1887 -Middle Georgia Argus - W. R. Weaver's mill is now in full blast, with John O'Rear at the helm, who is one of the best millers in Middle Georgia. The mill has just been overhauled with new casting, and the creek ditched out below and the machinery hums, the rocks are turned around like they didn't weigh but a pound and a half.

Jackson Argus – Week of March 18, 1897

Mr. Weaver

Another of the old land marks of Butts county has fallen and as the leaves one

by one lose their hold upon the tree which bore them, so does man one by one

pass off of the state of action. “Uncle Billie,” as everybody knew and

mentioned him, had many friends as was evidence by the large concourse of people

who followed his remains to their last resting place. Mr. Weaver was a member

of the Baptist church in Jackson, and a bright Mason. He was buried at

Macedonia church at Stark, where his first wife was laid to rest. Rev. J. T.

Kimbell preached the funeral sermon and made some very touching remarks, having

been the personal friends of deceased since young manhood. Mr. Weaver was the

father of Mrs. J. F. Carmichael and Mr. Joe Weaver, of Jackson. He has other

children whose names we do not know. He leaves a young and affectionate wife,

also to mourn his death. All the relatives and friends have our sympathy in

their bereavement.

Jackson Argus – Week Of March 25, 1897 March 25, 1897

Two cases will come before the ordinary’s court next Monday in which he is

disqualified. Both are Will cases. One is the Will of Mr. William Weaver and

the later is the Will of the late T. J. Lane. Both Wills will be offered for

probate and as Mrs. J. F. Carmichael is a daughter of Mr. Weaver and one of the

parties at interest Judge Carmichael is disqualified under the laws form passing

on the case.

In the other case Mr. Lane’s widow is Judge Carmichael’s sister. Arrangement

have been made to have another ordinary present who will preside in these cases.

This, perhaps, is the first disqualified case before the ordinary within sixteen

years and it is more unusual that two such cases should come up for a hearing at

the same time.

Notes for MALINDA THOMAS:

William D. Thomas was a witness to the wedding of Joseph E. Weaver & Victoria A. Carr.

Burial site is directly in from the front door to Church.

Middle Ga. Argus – Week of April 14, 1891

Mrs. Malinda Weaver

Mrs. Malinda Weaver, wife of Mr. W. R. Weaver, of Coody’s district, died very

suddenly on yesterday about five o’clock afternoon. She was in usual health

and went in her buggy to a neighbor’s house on a visit. Returning she stopped

at Mr. Lem Hooten’s and immediately after sitting down she fell in a swoon and

died without a groan. Her remains will be laid to rest at Macedonia tomorrow

(Wednesday) at 11 o’clock. Rev. E. M. Hooten will conduct the funeral.

Truly it can be said, a good woman is gone. One moment in health; the next in eternity. Our sympathies are extended to the bereaved family.

Notes for FRANCIS MARION WEAVER:

Middle Ga. Argus – Week of March 3, 1893

On Wednesday evening a difficulty arose between Mr. Marian Weaver, who lives

five miles south of town, and a farm hand named John Grubbs, and Mr. Weaver was

compelled to kill him in order, he says, to save his own live.

Coroner Hardy went out on yesterday, empanelled a jury and investigated the

case and returned a verdict of murder. No arrest has been made, but from what

we can learn Mr. Weaver will surrender and demand a preliminary trial.

The Griffin Weekly News and Sun

Griffin, Georgia

Issue of March 10, 1893

Marion Weaver, who runs a farm near Elgin, in Butts County, shot and instantly killed a negro by the name of John Grubbs, on his farm one day last week. The trouble grew out of a quarrel about a suit of clothes that Mr. Weaver had promised the negro. Weaver has "skipped."

Middle Ga. Argus – Week of September 14, 1893

Mr. Marion Weaver, who stands indicted for killing John Grubbs, col., and who

has been hiding since the bill was found, returned home some weeks ago in a

very critical condition, suffering from a severe spell of typhoid fever. He

notified the sheriff that he was read to surrender, and Mr. Beauchamp went out

to his home and placed him under guard, he not being able to be confined in

jail. He made application for bail, and on Saturday Judge Hunt granted it,

fixing the bond at $4,000. The papers have been signed, but Mr. Weaver is low

down and it will be quite a while before he will be out.

Middle Ga. Argus – Week of September 21, 1893
